Who would have thought there could be so many variations for such a simple item. These Jamaican snacks stuffed with beef, chicken, goat, or vegetable fillings (spicy or non-spicy) are some of the most delicious foods you could have for cheap.

Not only are their beef patties delicious, but they also make the best jerk chicken as well.

As you take that bite into the flaky or soft pastry exposing the fillings inside, breathing in that aromatic smell, it’s just so wonderful.

With the option to buy frozen or unbaked, you can keep them in your freezer and save them for another day to calm your patty cravings. What are your methods of cooking these patties to reproduce that store-like quality?

For us, we like to use a toaster – whether it’s to prepare or reheat them. The heating coils on both sides – or one side with bagel setting enabled, heats the patty evenly and creates the flaky outer layer with a juicy center. But it does require some trial and error to master it successfully, otherwise, you’ll be left with a burnt patty instead.

Let’s go explore some of the best patties in Toronto we unraveled.

Also, most places only accept cash as a form of payment. So, you may want to bring some cash with you, otherwise, you’ll be walking out empty-handed.

1. Patty Time

Address: 2919 Lawrence Ave E, Scarborough, ON M1P 2S8
Phone: 416-265-4555

On the hunt for something simple yet delicious to snack on, then look no further, Patty Time has got you covered with their deliciously good patties.

Looking at the patties you may think there’s nothing special about it, but don’t let the aesthetic fool you. It’s always the subtle-looking ones that will catch you by surprise. As soon as you take that first bite and the burst of flavours come raiding your taste buds – that’s when you know you’ve hit the jackpot.

There are two flavours available here, beef or curry chicken, and it’s stuffed inside a flaky and thin pastry that comes served piping hot. So, be careful of that first bite! We want your scream to be the excitement from enjoying the patty and not because you burnt yourself. 😊

Not sure what’s their magic behind the silky-smooth fillings that are juicy and rich in flavours but you could tell it was made with fresh ingredients.

They also sell the patties in bulk. You can buy a dozen that are baked – ready to eat, or unbaked so you can save and enjoy them for another day.

If it’s not already on your list of places to get awesome patties, then you should definitely add Patty Time to it. Their patties are so good you won’t be able to stop with just one – they could even be the best in Scarborough!

2. Randy’s Take Out

Address: 1569 Eglinton Ave W, York, ON M6E 2G9
Phone: 416-781-5313

*UPDATE (2/24/2022)* It’s unfortunate to hear that Randy’s will be closing its door officially on Saturday, February 26, 2022.

This is largely due to the pandemic of COVID-19 and the ongoing Metrolinx construction that started way back in summer of 2011 – can you believe it’s been more than 10 years already!

It’s amazing knowing that Randy’s has been serving the community for more than 40 years and it’s sad to see a piece of history being lost.

There have been no words from the owners on whether they will reopen their business at a different location or not, but whatever the owners decide we wish them all the best.

Go make your way to Randy’s before it’s too late!

Whether it’s for snacking or for your lunch, Randy’s Take-Out is another place where you can find some delicious patties while you’re in that area.

However, due to ongoing constructions – hopefully, it’ll be completed soon, and the roads being mostly one lane it gets congested easily and not driver-friendly. But we do hope this will not deter you from trying out this place.

Their freshly baked Jamaican beef patties (with or without the Coco bread) are flaky, spicy, and tasty – just the way we love them, and smells so incredible. This could be one of the best you can find in our city’s west end.

They have three types of patties – beef, chicken, and veggie. All of them were great, but the beef one was definitely our top pick, the fillings were just so juicy and flavourful.

There’s usually a lineup in the morning but it’s a short wait.

3. Patties Express

Address: 4 Elm St, Toronto, ON M5G 1G7
Phone: 647-350-0111

Specializing in only patties at this little shop, Patties Express offers a variety of savoury patties – beef, curry chicken, and mixed vegetables. And they are all spicy except the beef filling, which has a non-spicy or extra spicy option for those who could handle the heat.

Their patties are flaky and stuffed with a decent amount of filling that should please anyone. Pair it up with coco bread that is fluffy, soft, and fresh, it’s almost as great as a full meal – but less expensive.

If you’re in the area don’t hesitate to drop by Patties Express by following the amazing scent of the coco bread being baked. And get yourself to a quick snack for super cheap that is fast and delicious – you won’t be disappointed!

4. Allan’s Pastry

Address: 3447 Kennedy Rd, Scarborough, ON M1V 3S1
Phone: (416) 292-3909

Allan’s pastry has two locations, one in Scarborough and the other in North York at the Peanut Plaza.

The Scarborough location, the spot where we normally hit, could be difficult to find for first-timers as it’s tucked away in a small plaza. Once you see the Medical Centre building, that is the plaza you need to turn into and make your way to the back of the building on the south side.

They have a variety of Jamaican patties up for grabs here – beef, chicken, curry goat, and a veggie option.

Can’t say much about the veggie and chicken patties as we normally get the spicy beef and curry goat. The pastry is flakey and light and the toppings are very flavourful that melt in your mouth. If the beef and curry goat was delicious, then the chicken and veggie patties can’t be too far off.

You can also buy them unbaked so you can save them for another day and have them at the comfort of your home or when you get a craving for them again.

5. Bakery On The Go

Address: Warden Subway Station / Various TTC Stations

Here in Toronto, there are a few TTC subway stations that sell beef patties. To name a few there’s Kennedy, Warden, Bathurst, and Islington stations. Can’t say which one is the best but we enjoyed the beef patties at Warden station.

The beef patties at Warden station aren’t special or anything too. The reason why we enjoyed it was that it was both cheap and good. Sometimes we even feel the beef patties were the frozen ones sourced from Patty King.

Late in the day going home from school or work but feeling hungry and having nothing to eat, or maybe because the bus you’re waiting for is taking forever to arrive. Well, thanks to these bakery shops and their low-cost beef patties we were able to suppress our hunger.

As for which station takes the crown for best on-the-go patties, we say it’s the one that is the closest to your subway stop.

6. Patty King

Address: 321 Progress Ave, Scarborough, ON M1P 2Z7
Phone: 416-321-1034

Living in Scarborough for so many years, we never knew Patty King existed in this area for the longest time until a buddy of ours took us here.  It could possibly be the smell from Atlantic recycling that made us not want to stay in that area for too long – if you’re in this area during the summertime, you’ll know what we’re talking about.

It was a good thing he took us here and now we have another place to add to our list to get some awesome patties.

Patty King makes vegetable, chicken, and beef patties but our usual choice is the spicy beef patty. The spiciness is just the right level and the flaky pastry has a nice crunch. As for the fillings, it’s delightful and has a nice chewy taste.

You can also buy bulk unbaked patties here to heat up at home. These are the same ones you find at local supply chains like No Frills or Walmart but they didn’t pass quality control to make it to retail packaging.

They also serve other food besides patties and we heard their jerk chicken is finger-licking good. So, will definitely be coming back here to try that out.

7. Michidean Limited

Address: 7725 Birchmount Rd, Markham, ON L6G 1A8
Phone: 905-946-0708

If you’re looking for bulk patties to keep at home so you can eat them at your own leisure, then patties from Michidean Limited are a wonderful choice.

Located in Markham around Birchmount Rd and 14th Ave, this place could be a bit difficult to find, but don’t give up as it’s worth looking for. Once you finally made your way to this place and tried their patties, you’ll be glad you didn’t make that irrational choice to drive away.

Their patties have a nice flaky crust, rich saucy fillings full of flavour, and the ratio of crust to meat is also well balanced.

The different variations available at Michidean are beef, chicken, or vegetable. But we recommend the spicy beef as it was on point, especially the spiciness – it lingers in your mouth.

8. Allwyn’s Bakery

Address: 81 Underhill Dr, North York, ON M3A 1K8 / Multiple Locations
Phone: 647-847-4698

Allwyn’s Bakery doesn’t require much introduction as they make some of the best jerk chicken as well.

They have two patty flavours available, beef or chicken fillings. But as usual, our preferred option is the patty with beef fillings as that is the one we grew up with and liked the most.

The beef filling is succulent and full of flavour. If you pair it together with their coco bread and jerk chicken to create a jerk chicken stuff sandwich, it’s delicious. The texture and flavours are so good, you’ll be scarfing that down instantly.

If you’re ever in the area, you must try their patty or their sandwich stuffed with jerk chicken and a patty.

9. Golden Patty

Address: 187 Baldwin St, Toronto, ON M5T 1L8
Phone: (416) 977-3191

Some of the best food can be found in Kensington Market and it’s no different with Jamaican patty.

Located in this market is where you’ll find Golden Patty which makes some of the best patties you’ll ever taste.

There’s a variety of flavours for you to choose from at Golden Patty. For the meat lovers, there’s beef, chicken, jerk chicken, curry goat, ackee and saltfish, curry shrimp, and jerk pork. For vegetarians, there are two options – callaloo which is spinach, or vegetables.

The Jerk chicken, curry goat, and spicy beef were among our favorites here. The spicy beef patty had a nice spicy sensation and the jerk chicken and curry goat were succulent. Together with the flaky pastry, it was magnificent. There’s also the option to add coco bread to your beef patty, which is a nice combination as the coco bread was fluffy and sweet.

They have other items on their menu like roti and rice dishes, which we will be coming back for.
