Blondies Pizza Review
When I’m running really tight on time, I generally like treating myself to Pi Co pizza because they provide a healthier option compared to most pizza joints. I can customize my pizza however I like including loading them up with my favourite leafy greens like spinach and arugula!
But one of my friends, Darrin, suggested Rui and I join him and a few others at Blondies.
It was a nice sunny day, so we ordered some pizza at Blondies, the one at Leslieville (1555 Dundas Street East), and ate at a nearby park.
I’ll tell you my absolutely honest opinion about Blondies and whether this pizza joint lives up to its hype. On top of that, I’ll let you know what the others thought since their opinions are different from mine.
Here’s what we ordered.
1. Hot Girl (13″ for $20)
For beginners who haven’t tried Blondies and want their hottest and most popular item, we recommend the “Hot Girl” pizza.
Whew, what a name to live up to. But what WAS on this pizza?
To start, the “Hot Girl” features Venetian pepperoni, pickled jalapeno, and honey.
What’s so special about this pizza is you get cup-style pepperoni (deeper, richer flavor) and you get a sweet and a very light kick of spice combination in your mouth. Just FYI, it’s actually NOT spicy at all, you just get a nice pickled jalapeno kick!
And just a warning to those of you who are terrified of grease or oily food like me, the Hot Girl pizza has a lot of it – especially in that little cup-style pepperoni that’s filled with oil. It’s almost as if you’re drinking it from each individual cup, but not exactly.
You can’t quite see the oil inside each cup in this picture, but it’s definitely more obvious in person.
Despite the greasiness, everyone (except for me) loved it and rated this as their favourite pizza from Blondies. In fact, they rated it as one of their favourite pizza of all time.
The verdict? Everyone at the table agreed the “Hot Girl” was a home run. Again, excluding me because I found it way too greasy for my liking.
So, if you’re looking for something packed with flavour, oil, and mouth-watering pepperoni with a slight kick of jalapenos, then this pizza is sure to satisfy your cravings.
The conclusion is that everyone loved this pizza but it wasn’t for me.
However, I have to admit it tastes better (and I mean way better) than your typical one-topping pepperoni pizza at joints like Pizza Hut, Pizza Nova, and Pizza Pizza.
Then again, anything tastes better than Pizza Pizza, right? It’s an insult to even mention the names of these joints in this review and compare them.
2. Twin Pines Heartbreak (13″ for $21)
Want to add some veggies like arugula onto your pizza?
Then the “Twin Pines Heartbreak” is for you!
It comes with double pepperoni, mushrooms, pecorino cheese, and a little bit of leafy greens like arugula.
Similar to their signature “Hot Girl” pizza, the pepperoni is still filled up with little cups of oil. This pizza tastes a bit different in the sense that you get more of a mushroom and cheese taste. Not to mention, you’ll also notice the natural flavours of arugula, which balances out the unhealthiness and pairs nicely with everything.
It’s important to mention that you won’t feel that tiny or mild spice here in the absence of the jalapenos. I have to admit that does add a nice flavor to the pizza, but it’s still enjoyable without them.
Everyone including me thought this pizza was a good order.
Though everyone else liked the “Hot Girl” pizza better, I personally do prefer the “Twin Pines Heartbreak” because it’s got more toppings for me to enjoy. I am a huge fan of mushrooms and arugula in my pizza, so it’s no surprise that I liked this one better than plain pepperoni with jalapenos.
Also, if I had an option, I would ditch the pepperoni and sub it for chicken breast or some other leaner form of protein.
It’s very unfortunate that they don’t have healthier options like chicken or turkey breast. Their only chicken options are “chicken sausages” (called the “Coolverine” pizza) or “shredded chicken” (called “Regina, the Mean One”) which are all dark and processed meat. Ugh!
The conclusion is that the “Twin Pines Heartbreak” pizza is perfect for those of you who want pepperoni with other toppings like mushrooms and green leaves. Also perfect for those of you who don’t like jalapenos.
3. Scarlet Sunrise (13″ for $20)
The “Scarlet Sunrise” pizza is a combination of mushrooms, cooked basil, pickled onion, and some truffle butter.
Truffle butter?
Now that’s something you don’t see every day!
The “Scarlet Sunrise” pizza from Blondies offers a unique and delicious combination of flavours that will make you forget all about the usual pepperoni and cheese pizzas.
The truffle butter adds a savoury flavour to the pizza and it also gives it that extra layer of buttery goodness. The pickled onions add a nice taste to the pizza while the cooked basil adds an extra layer of complexity to the flavour profile.
This pizza is definitely unique and unlike any other pizzas, you’ve had before.
Everyone says this pizza was almost a tie with the “Twin Pines Heartbreak” pizza, though I personally thought it was better because of the absence of pepperoni. Let’s face it, who doesn’t love mushrooms and truffle butter?
The only thing I would change is that they need to add more mushrooms to this pizza. I don’t think there was enough! It would just take the pizza to the next level.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this pizza and it is definitely one of the best pizzas from Blondies in my opinion.
The conclusion is 3 of my friends voted for the “Hot Girl” pizza and I was the only oddball who voted for the “Scarlet Sunrise”.
Take what I say with a grain of salt – I prefer pizzas that don’t contain pepperoni or sausages.
Had the “Twins Pines Heartbreak” not contained pepperoni, I would have preferred it over the Scarlet Sunrise because of the raw arugula.
If you’re a little bit more health conscious like me, then you will agree. But if you don’t care for healthier options, then you’ll love Blondies’ “Hot Girl”. As a matter of fact, you’ll enjoy most of their other pizzas with pepperoni or sausage.
Regardless, most Blondies pizzas taste better than other pizzas (yes, taste-wise but not health-wise) and you generally won’t go wrong no matter what you order.
Food: 3.8/5
Everyone today agrees that Blondies Pizza tastes amazing and there’s no doubt about that.
Most of my friends give it between 3.8 to 4.0 stars out of 5.
I personally give it a 3.0 out of 5 stars not because it doesn’t taste good; but, only because it doesn’t satisfy my desired dietary requirements.
In other words, it’s very unhealthy for my liking – filled with refined carbs from white flour, greasy pepperoni, and a lack of healthier proteins and fresh veggies. That’s a no for me despite how “good it tastes”. I just don’t enjoy that type of food anymore and I don’t care what people think of me. That is my raw and honest opinion.
The others especially loved the “Hot Girl” pizza because of the classic pepperoni with a little kick from the jalapenos. It’s the must-order item from Blondies.
Service: 3/5
The service was average, not bad but not great. The staff was polite and friendly enough, but the ordering process took longer than usual.
It’s a good thing we arrived early, as we would have eaten later than usual.
Ambiance: 3/5
We went to the joint at Leslieville, and the atmosphere was pretty decent. Nice and cozy, but no place to sit other than outside where the benches are. That only works out for a nice spring or summer day.
Price: $$
$68.93. Divided by four people, that comes out to be $17.23 per person.
That isn’t what you called “cheap eats” since you can order a large or two mediums at fast food joints like Pizza Nova or Domino’s for less. But of course, those pizza joints can’t be compared to Blondies. At Blondies, you’ll get better-tasting pizza!
Personally, for me, I much rather pay $17 at Pi Co for a personalized pizza that I can customize with healthier toppings. Plus, it tastes pretty good too without too much grease sitting in your stomach!
Overall Rating of Blondies Pizza: 3.8/5
Overall, Blondies Pizza is a delicious pizza spot in Toronto and you should definitely try it out if you’re ever in the neighbourhood.
It’s a fun spot to bring friends or family and enjoy some great pizza. People especially love the “Hot Girl” pizza with pepperoni and jalapenos. I’d suggest that you give it a try if you’re into spicier types of pizza.
The service could be a little bit faster and the prices are on the higher side as compared to other pizza spots, but all in all, it’s a great place to get a quick bite. So, no matter if you’re looking for a fun night out or just need something to munch on in a hurry, Blondies Pizza is for you.
There’s no doubt that this pizza joint isn’t as healthy as you’d like, but it sure is delicious. Just give it a try and indulge a little of it on one of your “cheat days” – that’s what I did and it makes me feel less guilty.
