By now we’re all tired of the repeated lockdowns. This has been a huge inconvenience for all of us and being stuck at home is not fun too.
With most restaurants or your favourite food joints being either closed, permanently shut down, operating at a smaller capacity, or only offering takeout options, finding a place to dine at or ordering takeout can be unexpectedly difficult.
And cooking at home for each meal is starting to get boring and tiring…
However, there’s this place that we usually like to hit up when we’re feeling lazy and want to enjoy some Hong Kong style fast food takeout.
The place is called Great Fountain Fast Food and it’s located inside the Dynasty Centre Shopping Mall near Sheppard and Midland intersection. They call this place a mall, but really, people come here for the food court only.
This place has been around for more than a decade and continues to serve food that is consistently good tasting. It’s good that this place is still operating – we’ll be sad if this place were to closed down.
Here’s our take on why we like this place.
Great Fountain Fast Food Review
When it comes to their food, there’s so many selections to choose from – we believe they have over one hundred items to choose from, not sure how the chef manages to remember the recipe for every dish.
Our usual items we get here is their Baked dish with two kinds of meat, Black Pepper Pork Chop on Rice, and Fried Beef with Rice Noodle.
Baked Rice 2 Kinds of Meat
One of my personal favourites is their baked item – #87 under the hot item menu. I always go for the fried rice with chicken steak and pork chop on teriyaki sauce option.
It seems there are two items on their menu that are numbered 87 – T87 and #87 under the hot item menu. We ordered the T87 one time and let me tell you, it’s not the same! When I got the food, it wasn’t the one I was expecting – T87, by default, comes with minced beef.
For #87 you get the choose of two kinds of meat – can’t remember exactly what the meat choices are as it’s been a while since I asked, but I always go for chicken steak and pork chop. As for the sauce there’s tomato or teriyaki – if you don’t specify then the default is tomato sauce. All of this is served on top of the fried rice.
The chicken steak and pork chop are perfectly cooked. They are tender and juicy, and the pieces is fairly large as well. The feeling of taking a big bite out of the chicken steak or pork chop as you slowly eat away is absolutely amazing! The teriyaki sauce is a bit sweet, mixing it together with the rice was just delicious.
I always get full from this dish and it leaves my stomach completely satisfied.

For the Black Pepper Pork Chop on Rice, it comes with two large pork chops that is severed on top of fried rice with teriyaki sauce. This one is considered to be my oldest brother’s top choice – 95% of the time he asks for this item when we order takeout here.
They don’t overcook the pork chop, so, it’s not dry at all and the seasoning is on point. Another yummy to our tummy dish!
We only wished they provided more teriyaki sauce. For two large pork chops and plenty of rice, it looks as though they only provide one and a half teaspoon of teriyaki sauce. This seems a bit too little for us. We were thinking at least three teaspoons?
Fried Beef with Rice Noodle

We like their Fried Beef with Rice Noodle as well. Compared to other takeout restaurant, we find that Great Fountain provides more beef than their competitors.
The noodles are cooked perfectly the way we like it – soft and a bit chewy, the beef is tender, and the bean sprouts still has a nice crunch when you bite on it.
We find that the portion they provide is also a good amount – we were left full after consuming this dish.
Food: 4/5
We have been coming to this food court for many years now and we have a few friends who often order takeout from here as well.
So far, the taste of their food is consistent with each visit at Great Fountain. However, we haven’t tried the other dishes on their menu yet as there are so many – it’s just the tip of the iceberg of what we have tried compared to what’s available.
Service: 3.7/5
They got my order wrong once. Although it wasn’t a big deal to me, it would have been nice if they double-check their order before it’s prepared or even to reconfirm the order you placed.
For the baked dish that I usually order they gave me squid instead of chicken steak and spaghetti instead of rice. It just wasn’t as great and I felt a little disappointed – even though the food still tasted good.
They can’t expect the customer to open each bag to confirm if the order is correct or not. There’s so many and they strategically packed the items in the bags so that they secured. It’ll be so inconvenient to open each one of them and check.
Also, the wait time is long. There will be customers who would order after me and they will get their food before me. So far, my average wait time for four to five items is roughly about 25 minutes.
Furthermore, one time I said for them to keep the soup because my family hardly drinks them and we didn’t want the soup to go to waste. Although, they didn’t give me an attitude, one of their workers was like – “you could’ve told me in advance, I already packed everything”.
I was just trying to be nice and not waste food. I guess I will tell them in advance next time.
Ambiance: N/A
There’s not much to say about ambiance here. It’s in a food court area so nothing special. When things start to get better, hopefully, tables will be available for you to eat there.
However, during pre-pandemic the place will get packed and it could be difficult to find seating. There’s a TV located at both ends it’s usually tuned to Fairchild TV or CP24 channel. They don’t turn up the audio so you can’t really tell what’s happening. Once again, nothing special.
Price: $
We would say it’s one of the cheapest places around for the amount of takeout food you get. In addition to the item you ordered, most dish comes included with their soup of the day – simple pork bone soup, and coffee or ice lemon tea of your choice.
It’s well worth the price!
Overall Rating for Great Fountain Fast Food: 3.9/5
If you’re feeling lazy and don’t want to cook, but want a large selection of dishes to choose from, and want Hong Kong style fast food – then this is the place for you. And it’s all at a reasonable price too!
