It’s been a while since I’ve met up with my friends from my previous job. To catch up, we decided to meet up!
It wasn’t easy to decide which restaurant we were going to meet up. COVID-19 has caused quite a stir and some bits of challenges for everything and everyone.
Many hours later, someone suggested Mt. Everest Restaurant – a place where we haven’t been to in a long time.
Although it wasn’t convenient for my friends, one living in downtown and the other living in Markham, we stuck with our choice. Delicious food is worth the travel.
Read on for our review on Mt. Everest Restaurant and what we have to say about this place.
Food
Typically, we go for the lunch specials at Mt. Everest and today was no different. Their lunch portion is just the right amount that will satisfy one’s hunger at one low price – don’t think it can get any better than that for delicious food!
The lunch special menu isn’t too complicated. You pick two different entrees from the nine available items, select either naan or roti, and your choice of pop. If you want the same item, then there would be an extra charge of $1. This restriction didn’t exist when we first visited this place. It seems to have taken effect in the latter half of 2019.
We can only guess it was to prevent people like me who liked to order the same two entrees, I always went for two Khasi Ko Masu, which could cause a shortage on the more popular item.
For the regulars or those who are familiar with their cuisine, it’ll be easy to select the two entrees one prefers. For newcomers, it could be a bit of a challenge as a brief description is not included for each item under the lunch special menu. In order to find out more details, you’ll need to refer to the regular menu.
Take, Palak Paneer, for example. To find out more details about this dish, you’ll need to search for it in the regular menu. Then you would know it is, ‘minced spinach cooked with cubes of fresh homemade cottage cheese, mild and delicately spiced’.
Imagine doing this on all nine items!
It’ll be nice if they could update their lunch special menu to include the same description. We believe it would save them a lot of time from answering the same questions repeatedly for all newcomers.
Because of the “pick two different entree rule”, I went for my favorite Khasi Ko Masu and Chicken Makhani. As for my friends, they both went for Khasi Ko Masu and Chicken Curry. We all chose naan except for one person – due to health reasons, they’re on a gluten-free diet. Unfortunately, Mt. Everest restaurant doesn’t offer this option. However, they were kind enough to offer additional rice as a substitute for the naan/roti.
The meal comes served with rice and a small amount of vegetables – which is perfect for me as I’m not a big veggie lover. As for the vegetables, it consisted of cucumber, cabbage, carrots, a bit of parsley with light salad dressing. Their rice is steamed basmati rice.
The Khasi Ko Masu (goat on the bone) was very tender! There was no strong gamy smell and the taste was exactly as I remembered when I first dined at this restaurant 3 years ago! Definitely giving them a thumbs-up on the consistency of quality! The sauce was also perfect with the naan – so tasty that I had none left when I was done with my meal.
The Chicken Makhani (butter chicken) was sweet with a hint of buttery flavour and the chicken was delicious as well. In addition, the chicken pieces were meaty. The sauce was good, but I think the Khasi Ko Masu sauce was better.
As for the Chicken Curry, my friend’s response was – “It’s good!”
We recommend to go for the naan here as they are made fresh. The naan is served hot, and it’s soft and buttery – really good! We haven’t tried the roti, probably we’ll reserve it for the next visit!
Service
Our server was nice and accommodating. He was the only server working there that day as there weren’t many people dining in and instead opting for take-out.
Since I arrived early, I had to wait for the other two to arrive. The server showed me to the table and proceeded to bring the menu over and filled the glasses with water.
As someone in our group was running late, we decided to place our order, the one running late texted us what he wanted. Due to past experience, the food could take a while to come out so we decided to order early and by the time he arrives the food should be ready.
Surprisingly, once we placed our order, the food was ready in about 5 minutes. But our missing person still wasn’t here yet – that was 25 minutes ago! lol
The server noticed our group was still short one and asked if it’s okay if he brings out the food once he arrives – which was perfectly fine with us. Thirty minutes later, he finally arrived and our server quickly brought out our food.
As mentioned earlier, one person in our group was on a gluten-free diet but the naan and roti were not gluten-free. He tried his best to see what he can substitute for those options – a plus for effort.
Periodically, he would check up on us to see if everything was okay.
Ambiance
The place was spacious and it was well maintained – clean and plenty of light.
However, we did notice one thing that was different after a while – they weren’t playing Himalayan (we believe it’s that) music over the speakers. We’re not sure if it was just today or that’s the new standard going forward, but it was just the radio station being played over the speakers – a bit of a letdown.
There are a few pictures and decorations on the wall for you to enjoy while having your meal. Overall, a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere.
Oh! I do have one suggestion! – that is to fix the entrance to the restaurant. There are two doors to get through before you’re actually inside the restaurant and both doors open the opposite way at the worst possible direction. The outside door is you have to push and the inside door is you have to pull. They do get in each other’s way, the space between these two doors is about one door length.
Could someone please fix this – Mt. Everest or building management?
Price
For $10.99 you get two choices of DIFFERENT sides, naan, rice, vegetables, and a pop. We think this is a steal. It used to be $8.99 but that was more than 3 years ago.
A lunch buddy of mine once said to the workers there – “For this food quality and the quantity you give, you could be charging more than $8.99”.
Well, years later they did increase the price, but $2 is not a lot in our books for the amazing food that Mt. Everest serves!

Mt. Everest serves good quality food at a reasonable price – especially their lunch menu. We think it should be on everyone’s list to try at least once, twice or even more 😊.
